Background

Brag Enterprises Limited is a community based economic regeneration agency situated within the Crosshill Business Centre. It aims to help get the Central Fife economy moving by offering unemployed people the opportunity to gain quality training and by helping small businesses set up locally.

The European Social Fund, Fife Council, Glenrothes and Lauder Colleges have financed these courses to enable people to gain the skills and qualifications needed for jobs. The courses offer an intensive opportunity to gain a clutch of nationally recognised qualifications.

Acceptance Criteria

A Large variety of part time, flexible learning and full time courses are available. Acceptance criteria vary but usually little or no work or academic experience is expected.

Introduction to Computer Applications

Starting Date - Flexible Duration - Flexible but expect about 18 weeks

Preferred Entry Requirements - No formal entry requirements

What this course is about

The development of basic skills in using a computer for word processing, spreadsheets and maintaining a database. Keyboard skills and simple computer operation tasks are included. You will develop good computer literacy and the confidence to take up further study or seek employment where computer skills are required.

What the course will cover

There is some flexibility in the content of the programme, but will normally include 4/5 modules from the following:

Introduction to Computer Applications

Information Technology 1

Information Technology 2

Introduction to Computer Software

Using a Keyboard

Training facilities

The Flexible Learning Unit has Internet access facilities Other rooms are equipped with network computers A Video Telephony facility is available as is access to job vacancy information on-line.

Further Study Options

Progress could be made to National Certificate programmes in Information Technology or Business/

Office Administration.

SVQ (Level II)

Course Contents

This course will include the following elements:

Guidance/Learning Support

The purpose of this element of the programme which will take up around 25% of your time is for you to assess your strengths, weaknesses and begin to plan our future career path.

The context of this element will include: written and spoken communication: numeracy; career planning and a team building exercise based at the Mines Rescue Service in Crossgates and Outdoor Education at Lochore Meadows Country Park.

Work Placement

The purpose of this element of the programme is to acquaint you with current industry standards in information technology and develop experience in a work experience setting, this will account for around 25% of the programme. You will have an opportunity, in time allocated. to follow much of this up as your own personal project. The work placement will take approximately 30 days.

Vocational Training

The purpose of this element will be to aquatint you with a personal computer hardware; software and applications. We shall be using IBM compatible personal computers with Microsoft software. By the end of the programme you will have no difficulty in navigating your way around a PC and using it as an effective working tool.

Trainee Allowances

An allowance of £76 per week will be payable by cheque each Friday. Traveling expenses over £3 will be met in some instances. A childcare allowance is also payable under certain circumstances. This payment will be made directly to the nursery/registered childminder/after school group. We are happy to supply a list of childcare providers.

 

Administration SVQ

(Level II)

Background

Acceptance Criteria

To be eligible for this course applicants must be :-

1. Unemployed (not necessarily registered) preferably up to 18 months or returning to
work after raising a family.
2. Reside in a Central Fife village e.g. Benarty, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Kelty and
Abbeyview.
3. Age 18 years+

Applicants need not have any previous work or academic experience but, they must be
able to demonstrate an absolute commitment to learning.

Course Contents

The course will include the following elements:-

Guidance/Underpinning Knowledge

The purpose of this element of the programme which will take up around a quarter of your
time is for you to gain the necessary underpinning knowledge to enable you to do the job
as well as to assess your strengths, weaknesses and begin to plan your future career path.

The context of this element will include: written and spoken communications, numeracy,
career planning and a team building exercise based at the Mines Rescue Service in

Work Placement

The purpose of this element of the programme is to give you practical experience in a real
work setting. This will account for around a third of the programme. This element of the
programme will come towards the end of the 26 weeks.

Vocational Training

The purpose of this course will be to acquaint you with all aspects of administration in an
office environment.

Trainee Allowances

Call Centre Skills

The new and developing call centre industry offers many job opportunities. We are offering a one year job to long term unemployed young people in the industry.

This project is aimed at 18 to 24 year old young people who have been registered
unemployed for 6 months or more.

New Deal

New Deal is the governments national programme to combat long term unemployment. It offers Four options to 18 to 24 year olds.

Paid employment
Full time education
Environmental work
Opportunities for work in the voluntary sector

BRAG Enterprises jointly manages the Voluntary Sector Option in Fife. The VSO offers:

26 weeks work experience
One day per week vocational training
Personal development and guidance
Assistance with finding a job

Opportunities for placements include:

Childcare
Adult Care
Transport
Retail
Administration
Information Technology
Furniture making/woodwork
and many other areas

Participants receive their benefits plus £15 per week plus assistance with their travel and childcare.
